Jefferson County Democrats met for their Off-Year Caucus Sunday, March 16, at 2 P.M., at the Fairfield Senior citizen Center. Twenty-nine democrats were present to conduct business and enjoy a dessert potluck. Jefferson County Chair, Phil Scott, was elected permanent chair of the caucus and Carol Carlson was elected caucus secretary. A greeting from Gordon Fisher, State Democratic Chair, was read by Scott. State Representative John Whitaker updated the assembly on progress at the State Legislature in Des Moines. The main business of the day was filling spots on the Jefferson County Democratic Central Committee. Retaining their positions on the executive committee are Phil Scott, Chair, Barbara Hood, Vice-chair, Lois Brokken, Immediate Past Chair, and Kristin Carlson, Secretary. Precinct representatives are as follows: Blackhawk-Polk-Bill Parker; Buchanan-Susie Drish and Mary Harris; Center-Cedar-Charles McCracken and Jennifer Lunsford; Des Moines-Liberty-Darlene Vorhies and Patricia Wood; Fairfield 1-Fran Cuciti and Tom Terrien; Fairfield 2-Helen Watkins and Brian McDonald; Fairfield 3-Jay Mattsson and Jeanne Doggett; Fairfield 4-Carol Carlson and Eric Michener; Fairfield 5-daryn Hamilton and Tim McQuarry; Lockridge-Round Prairie-Barb Hood and Judy Hoover; Locust Grove-Norton Giltner and Susanna Felder; Walnut-Penn-Francis Mottett. The Democrats assembled heard presentations from the campaigns of various presidential candidates. Chris Haylor spoke on behalf of John Kerry's campaign; Rodd McCloud for Howard Dean's, and Vijay Uppal for Richard Gephardt's. Letters were read from Sen. John Edwards & Fern Penna, a candidate from NY state. Various resolutions were presented to be passed on to the State party. They voiced support of environmental preservation, the Freedom of Information Act, the quest for energy independence and self sufficiency, and the work to stop the Bush administration and it's war of aggression in Iraq. Regular monthly meetings are held at 7:30 P.M. the first Monday of the month at the Carrington Point meeting room. The next meeting will be April 7.
